Occupational Therapy Education in Singapore

Established in 1992, the Nanyang Polytechnic Diploma in Occupational Therapy (NYP DipOT) was the first occupational therapy education program in Singapore. After adapting the original curriculum from the University of Sydney, the NYP DipOT has remained accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists ever since its inception. As the healthcare landscape evolved, the academic curriculum was reviewed every five years to address changing needs locally and reflect global trends in professional development. Thus, over time, a rigorous and robust education program, that was uniquely Singaporean yet internationally recognised, was shaped.

The NYP DipOT is recognised as a primary registrable qualification by the Allied Health Professions Council, and many registered occupational therapists in Singapore are alumni of the NYP DipOT program. For more than 20 years, the school has trained and nurtured a majority of occupational therapists in the local healthcare industry, many of whom are now leaders in the profession across various sectors and practice settings.

As the last cohort of NYP DipOT students graduate in 2018, the SAOT Council would like to put on record and acknowledge the significant contributions that the NYP DipOT program has made towards furthering the cause of occupational therapy in Singapore. Indeed the NYP DipOT program will continue to be an inseparable part of the history of occupational therapy in Singapore, even as the profession welcomes a new era in local occupational therapy education, with the advent of the four-year Bachelor’s degree program in the Singapore Institute of Technology.
