More wheelchair- and elder-friendly features – such as ramps, larger lifts and more seating areas – must be provided in new buildings, under accessibility updates to the Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) regulations.
The revised Code on Accessibility in the Built Environment will take effect on 1 November 2025—introducing expanded requirements for wheelchair access, elder-friendly facilities, lactation rooms, visual/tactile aids, and more.
🧭 Dr Tim Xu from SIT, represented SAOT and played an active role in the BCA Code Review Committee (Sept 2023–Apr 2025), ensuring the new standards reflect real-world usability across age, ability, and mobility needs.
👩🦽 From control panel heights to resting spaces, anthropometric data to tactile guides—OTs brought user-centered, evidence-based insights to shape a more inclusive Singapore.
✨ Key features shaped by OT input:
✔️ Barrier-free linkways and enlarged lift cars
✔️ Elder-friendly toilet and rest areas
✔️ Visual and hearing accessibility standards
✔️ Lactation rooms in public and workplace settings
✔️ Inclusive design informed by real human measurements
We’re proud to see OT voices embedded in national infrastructure policy—transforming accessibility from a checklist to a lived reality.
